Why Art Matters: Arts In Education

Series 4 of LIFEWTR “Why Art Matters” shows three emerging artists whose lives were changed by arts education. This video focuses on educators, with a visit to a public school which is finding that arts education improves student performance in surprising ways. We go behind the scenes for candid interviews with staff and high schoolers to explore how arts education impacts students across the board – even those who won’t pursue an arts career.

[ Ari Hauben] I hear a lot about like concern
00:05
for the lack of arts in education
00:07
more than I hear about the value of arts in education.
00:17
Fostering creativity at McKinley South End Academy
00:19
is important, because just as a whole,
00:21
being creative in life is important.
00:24
Students who participate in art
00:25
ultimately I think are gonna be better thinkers
00:28
than students who don't.
00:32
I've seen it many times in students who thrive in an art
00:35
have done better in English, math, science,
00:38
has stayed in school more.
00:40
[Luis Gonzalez] Before I really was not into school.
00:42
There was nothing for me in here.
00:44
But when I noticed they had an art class,
00:46
and that brought it to a whole 'nother level.
00:51
[Ari] If you give a kid a reason to go to school,
00:53
because they like to do something,
00:54
they're more likely to be in school.
00:56
If they're more likely to go to school
00:57
on the day that they have art,
00:58
then they're more likely to go to their other classes.
01:03
The things I hope my students get out of class
01:05
are the things that I'm getting out of it.
01:07
[Student] My art teacher, Hauben,
01:08
I never had someone like that before.
01:10
It helps me out in life, you know,
01:12
to have someone there on my side.
01:19
LIFEWTR and Scholastics had teamed up with each other
01:21
to create a lesson plan
01:23
on the bottle I had designed for them.
01:25
[Ari] Scholastic is the vehicle that will help share
01:28
these individual paintings on a bigger level.
01:31
In education, the more opportunity you provide for students
01:34
to be good at things, the greater possibility it is
01:36
for those students to then be successful.
