Chris Hemsworth Confesses Liam Hemsworth Almost Got Cast as Thor

The first time Chris Hemsworth auditioned for “Thor,” he didn’t get very far. “I blew my audition, I guess,” he confesses in his new Screen Test. Instead, the producers seemed taken with another Australian, his brother Liam Hemsworth. Eventually, Chris was brought back in, and this time he nailed it. “I came in with a little motivation and maybe frustration that my little brother had gotten further than me,” he says. Plus, he tells of kissing wife Elsa Pataky as Thor.

So we were in Hong Kong doing reshoots for Thor.
00:02
The director comes up to me, and he says,
00:04
Basically it's just the final kiss of the movie.
00:06
You have to kiss Natalie,
00:07
but she's not here so we've brought in these girls.
00:09
He said, I know this sounds awful
00:10
or kinda whatever, but he said,
00:13
Do you wanna pick one? Who do you wanna kiss?
00:15
And had these young ladies who were all wonderful,
00:18
and I said, My wife's around the corner.
00:20
Let's get her in. And she's the same height.
00:23
I won't have to explain to her
00:25
what I've been doing at work
00:26
if I'm having to kiss someone else.
00:28
Yeah, the final kiss in that movie is between my wife and I.
00:33
I remembered reading the breakdown for Thor.
00:36
It said must be over 6'3 and 200 pounds, and I thought,
00:40
Oh cool this is the one thing that sort of fits me,
00:42
you know?
00:43
Most of the time I'd have to lie about my height
00:44
and say I was a little shorter,
00:45
and I've only get cast as a football player or something.
00:48
So I thought great, this is up my alley.
00:49
I came and did the audition with Ken Branagh,
00:52
thought I nailed it,
00:53
and then never heard anything back,
00:55
but my little brother was in Australia
00:57
and had sent a tape across.
00:59
He got a call back and then another call back
01:00
and then was down to the last
01:01
kinda four or five people for it,
01:03
and I remembered sitting in Vancouver shooting
01:06
Cabin in the Woods with Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon.
01:10
Both of them were looking at the trades
01:11
at the top five guys for Thor
01:13
and saying why aren't you in the mix here?
01:14
What happened?
01:15
I said, I don't know. I blew my audition I guess.
01:17
none of those guys got it.
01:18
My manager then called up and said,
01:20
You know, he's got an older brother.
01:21
Can we bring him back in?
01:22
So I did an audition in Vancouver in the hotel room
01:25
with my mom reading Anthony Hopkins' part,
01:28
and she must of nailed it because it got me back in
01:32
the room, and that second audition
01:33
was a lot different than my first one.
01:36
I came in kinda with a little motivation
01:38
and maybe frustration that my little brother
01:40
had gotten further than me.
01:43
The sibling rivalry sort of kicked up in me,
01:45
and then it kinda moved pretty quick from there.
01:48
I do have the hammer at home.
01:49
They're a little heavy for my kids to pick it up.
01:52
One of my boys in particular is obsessed with Thor,
01:55
and the other two are like, Yeah, dad's Thor. Whatever.
01:58
My son Tristan jumps off the kitchen bench
02:02
about on a daily basis and he yells all sorts of
02:06
motivating warrior cries and so on,
02:09
and I come home from work and he's like,
02:11
Papa, did you fight the monsters?
02:13
Did you beat up the monsters?
02:15
My cinematic crush?
02:16
Robin Wright-Penn in Princess Bride.
02:18
I just watched that the other day, actually.
02:19
God, she's just so incredibly beautiful, and confident,
02:22
and strong, and smart, and witty, and I love that movie.
02:26
First job I booked was on a show called Neighbors
02:28
which is a famous Australian TV show.
02:30
Basically one of the lead characters had been robbed
02:33
in a cafe, and I'm to come in and say,
02:36
What's going on? Quick, call the police!
02:37
And call the police.
02:38
That was my big moment.
02:42
I had a regular gig on another soap opera,
02:44
the sort of rival soap opera to that one, Home and Away.
02:48
Went through every melodramatic tragedy
02:50
that one can go through, and plane crashes,
02:53
and fires, and robberies, and landslides,
02:56
and all sorts of ridiculous things
02:59
would happen to my character.
03:00
I had three different kids, three different women.
03:02
I was 19 on the show for three years.
03:04
I just never, never had a birthday, never aged.
03:07
Any secret skills?
03:08
As a kid I had a real sort of interest in sewing.
03:11
I think it's cause like I couldn't afford any cool clothes
03:15
so I was like, I'm gonna make them myself.
03:16
And I remember doing cross stitch,
03:18
and for whatever reason, anything like really detailed
03:22
where I had to sort of physically and mentally be involved,
03:25
anything that could hold my attention
03:27
was a big plus for my parents in particular.
03:30
For some reason, cross stitch was one that enjoyed.
03:35
Buying like, or getting sort of patterns
03:38
for clothing and trying to make pants and things.
03:41
I don't think that went very far.
03:42
I think might've sewed a leg together or something,
03:45
but there was a period where I was like, That's it.
03:47
I'm going to be a designer and make clothes,
03:49
and then the next day was like,
03:51
I'm going to be a professional boxer,
03:53
and then the next day was like,
03:54
I'm going to be a lawyer, or a doctor.
03:56
I'd see movies and be inspired by things,
03:58
and I guess that's why acting fits
04:00
because I get to pretend to be all those things
04:02
with no great amount of risk or effort.
