Rami Malek and Eddie Redmayne on First Kisses, Embarrassing Musical Taste, and 'The Hills' Reboot

Rami Malek and Eddie Redmayne are no stranger to transformation, having both portrayed incredibly famous—and very diverse—real life figures on screen (as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody and Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything). But in real life, the pair couldn't be any more normal, as they talk about embarrassing first kisses, their first auditions, and, amazingly, the upcoming The Hills reboot.

[Lynn] Will you show your elephant
00:01
and giraffe, please? Yeah.
00:02
So I got an elephant.
00:04
A giraffe.
00:06
And these majestic animals.
00:08
God, I can't read.
00:09
You see at the zoo on the palm of your hand.
00:12
Well, a three-dimensional object of art
00:15
in the shape of an animal.
00:17
Look, we're being told to shut up already.
00:18
I know.
00:19
[Lynn] Are you gonna talk to me at all?
00:25
What was the very first thing you auditioned for?
00:28
Desperate to know the answer to that question.
00:29
Um.
00:30
The first thing I auditioned for.
00:33
Actually, I got a call from a casting director.
00:36
She asked to speak to the agent representing Rami Malek,
00:40
and I said, uh, speaking.
00:42
[laughs] You already got your part!
00:45
She said, what's your name?
00:46
And I said, this is Rami.
00:47
And she kind of laughed and she said, are you SAG?
00:51
I said, no.
00:52
I think I've made the giraffe, by the way.
00:54
And she started laughing and laughing.
00:55
And she said, all right, call me when you have
00:57
an agent and you're properly SAG.
00:59
I go, you're already laughing.
01:01
Give me a shot.
01:02
It was three lines in The Gilmore Girls.
01:03
That's your answer. Wow.
01:05
And I got the part. You got the part?
01:07
I got the part.
01:08
You got the part in your first ever audition,
01:09
whilst also playing you agent.
01:10
I just love that your agent had a lot
01:11
to live up to after that, as well.
01:13
You were like one for one.
01:14
Yes, exactly.
01:15
I was the book boy in a production of Oliver.
01:19
It was my first professional part.
01:21
And I got to say, books you ordered
01:24
from the bookseller, sir, and I had to run off.
01:26
I leave the books and then I run off too quickly,
01:30
and so Oliver has to take the books back,
01:31
and then he gets caught by the gang and stuff.
01:34
But because I had this big moment,
01:36
I would go and like, books your ordered
01:37
from the bookseller, sir.
01:38
And then I would gently saunter off the stage.
01:41
The director came up.
01:42
He's like, you can't!
01:44
You have to run off.
01:45
It's essential for the plot point that you run off.
01:46
And I was doing a slow bow. I love it out here.
01:50
Ooh, I wouldn't have just seen you from the start.
01:53
Exactly.
01:54
You did The Goat.
01:55
That's a great play.
01:56
It was a great play.
01:57
It's not a great play to take mother to.
01:59
Yeah, or my dad, actually,
02:00
'cause there's a bit in which my character
02:02
had to snog my dad onstage.
02:04
But I did get the best opening line.
02:07
That character, his first line onstage, the son in The Goat,
02:10
goes, you're doing what?
02:12
You're fucking a goat?
02:13
And his dad goes, don't swear.
02:15
He goes, well, you're fucking a fucking goat.
02:17
You're telling me not to swear!
02:18
[laughs]
02:19
[Lynn] What was the first album you ever bought?
02:21
No, no, no, please.
02:23
You know not to get me started on music,
02:25
because I have the worst taste in music.
02:27
Oh, do you really?
02:28
Yeah, it's awful.
02:29
Makeup trailer on a film set, people are like,
02:31
oh, do you like any particular music?
02:32
I always just have to be completely silent.
02:34
What, what?
02:35
Give me a-- No, no, no, no.
02:36
[Lynn] Rami, what was your first album?
02:37
I went and I bought Bob Dylan.
02:41
Oh, you're so cool!
02:43
No, but it is true.
02:44
Blonde on Blonde, and I bought a Joan Baez album.
02:48
I can't remember the name of it,
02:49
but she sang on one of his tracks,
02:52
or maybe numerous tracks, but I had to have them both.
02:56
And then I bought a Leonard Cohen for--
02:58
Rami, you're making me sick.
02:59
I bought Always.
03:01
First thing was Always by Bon Jovi.
03:03
Okay. Is that all right? [laughs]
03:06
Yes.
03:07
I like a good, emotional power ballad.
03:09
Yeah.
03:10
There's a place in London that just does the power ballads,
03:13
and you can go and sing along to everything, basically.
03:15
So you need to be really drunk.
03:16
You have to be wasted.
03:17
So I start being really coy,
03:20
and then I get really drunk and I'm like,
03:21
don't fucking dare take that microphone.
03:24
[laughs] Yeah.
03:25
[Lynn] Do you ever watch reality shows?
03:26
I'm quite excited because The Hills,
03:28
which was my original reality
03:30
TV guilty pleasure, has come back.
03:32
What is The Hills about?
03:33
Pitch me The Hills.
03:35
The Hills is about various genetically beautiful,
03:39
probably now aided by cosmetic.
03:43
I don't know, 'cause it's been--
03:45
Right.
03:46
Just wandering around LA, just chatting with each other.
03:49
It starts with that Natasha Bedingfield song,
03:51
which I didn't buy the single of,
03:52
but I might as well have. [laughs]
03:55
I was quite into Heidi Montag.
03:57
They always sort of had a bit
03:58
of a love/hate relationship with--
03:59
[Lynn] They have a child now.
04:01
Oh!
04:02
Is the child on the reality TV show?
04:03
'Cause I'm not so sure about that bit.
04:05
Has the child had any plastic--
04:07
[Lynn] The child hasn't had any work done.
04:09
No, no work done?
04:10
I guess that's what you say, work done, these days, right?
04:13
Is it all right to say plastic surgery?
04:16
Yes. Thank you.
04:17
You know, Robin Williams, I did the last
04:20
Night at the Museum with him,
04:22
and we got to shoot in the British Museum.
04:24
At night.
04:25
And I saw him just standing by this rock.
04:29
And I thought oh, he just wants to be alone.
04:32
What's he doing over there, just standing out into space.
04:35
Is he okay?
04:36
And I walked over to him.
04:38
And we had gotten pretty close
04:40
over the course of doing this film.
04:41
And I was quite worried, and I said what's going on?
04:45
And he just whispers, it's not often
04:47
that you get a chance to be alone with the Rosetta Stone.
04:51
And I was just like, I'm not gonna look
04:53
at my phone for the next week or two, or whatever.
04:56
[Lynn] How long did you go?
04:58
It's ridiculous.
05:00
You went and put one of your three photos on Instagram.
05:03
I asked him for a selfie.
05:06
Can we get a selfie with the Rosetta Stone? [laughs]
05:09
I mean, it's a once in a lifetime experience. [laughs]
05:12
You, me, Rosetta?
05:15
[Lynn] So what would you say your secret skill is?
05:18
I am incredibly good at being early.
05:20
I'm the person that gets to the airport
05:22
like a good four hours early.
05:23
Why is that?
05:24
I just freakin' love an airport.
05:26
If we're going on the time thing,
05:28
I think I managed to get to the airport
05:31
about a minute or two before the plane actually takes off.
05:34
Which again, is cool.
05:35
And I still get on it.
05:36
When I first went on holiday with my wife,
05:39
this is obviously before we were married,
05:42
we were going to Italy.
05:43
And it was agreed that we would meet on the plane,
05:46
because I knew that our burgeoning relationship
05:48
would not last, because she's the antithesis.
05:50
She's like sensationally late all the time.
05:53
And I'll never forget.
05:54
We were flying to Florence, and I got on this easyJet plane,
05:56
and I was sitting in the back surrounded
05:58
by three Irish monks and a nun.
06:00
And they were like, ladies and gentlemen,
06:03
I'm afraid this plane can't take off,
06:05
because there's one passenger.
06:07
And she was one space next to me.
06:09
And my wife comes in. [laughs]
06:12
I was like, if we had met in the airport,
06:14
I think the relationship would
06:15
have died before we even started.
06:16
But fortunately, there were some calming Irish monks.
06:20
[Lynn] Where was your first kiss?
06:22
Oh, wow.
06:23
It was at a school when I was about nine years old.
06:27
The school that I was at, next door was a Swedish school.
06:31
My friend was Swedish, and there was a Swedish school disco.
06:35
And played a game of spin the bottle.
06:38
And if it landed on a girl,
06:40
then I was gonna have to kiss them
06:42
in the middle of the circle.
06:43
And it did land on a girl, and I kissed her.
06:46
And I just remember the taste of Hubba Bubba.
06:49
That's my memory. [laughs]
06:52
[Lynn] But where you nervous?
06:53
Yeah, hell yeah.
06:55
Surrounded by a load of Swedes staring at me.
06:58
I think I kissed my sister by accident when I was a kid.
07:01
Incestuous first kiss.
07:03
Love it.
07:03
[Lynn] No, it was your twin brother.
07:04
Oh, man.
07:06
Is this gonna get me into trouble?
07:08
I think this is gonna get-- No it's not!
07:09
I was very, very young.
07:12
I have a twin brother and he did really well
07:15
with people across the board, and girls as well.
07:19
And I got a little jealous that he'd had his first kiss,
07:23
had a couple first kisses, and I hadn't.
07:25
It was really difficult.
07:26
Yeah, it's always complicated.
07:27
But he was kissing a girl and I thought, you know,
07:32
let's use this twin thing to our advantage.
07:38
Oh, that is bad, mate.
07:39
It's bad.
07:40
Its morally dubious.
07:42
I think it is.
07:43
So yeah, I'm gonna leave it at that.
07:45
[laughs]
07:46
[Lynn] [laughs] So Eddie, I know you have
07:48
a long history with magic.
07:49
And now that you're playing a magician--
07:52
Wizard, Lynn, wizard!
07:54
Big difference. Massive distinction there.
07:56
[Lynn laughs]
07:57
That's my wand work.
08:00
[Lynn] Your wand work is very good.
08:01
He's fucking good at this.
08:02
Yeah.
08:03
As a kid, I used to love doing magic,
08:04
and I had a brother who was six years younger than me,
08:07
which meant that I had the perfect audience.
08:09
And I would also do ventriloquism.
08:10
It was this amazing thing,
08:11
'cause you stuck your hand up the puppet.
08:13
And then there was a hand here with a glove,
08:16
so it looked like your hand was doing ventriloquism.
08:19
Hello, Tom.
08:20
Tom was my little brother.
08:21
And I'd just do these whole acts to him.
08:23
And when he got to about three years old and could speak,
08:26
he's like, I know what you're doing. [laughs]
08:28
And that was very heartbreaking.
08:30
So that was the end of my magic.
08:31
[Lynn] Okay, I think we will hold up the animals now.
08:35
Before we do, I was just gonna say
08:37
my first kiss story may or may not have been authentic.
08:42
I think it sounded beautiful.
08:43
[Lynn] Let's have your first kiss story
08:45
between these two little animals.
08:46
[laughs] Starts like this.
08:47
And then it goes like this.
08:50
Oh, it's always as I imagined it would be.
08:52
[laughs]
08:53
[Lynn] All right, excellent.
08:55
Now pick up your little fortune things.
08:57
Pick one.
08:57
Oh, I've been so excited about this.
08:59
I can't put my elephant my little elephant down.
09:00
You are such a gentleman.
09:01
[Lynn] You're so gentlemanly.
09:03
So it's a fortune teller.
09:04
[Lynn] Yes, this is a fortune teller.
09:05
And we just puncture this, right?
09:06
Ooh.
09:08
You are the poem someone wants to write.
09:11
Oh, here we go.
09:12
In a room full of art, everyone would stare at you.
09:16
This is like the chat-up lines that I never had.
09:18
Yeah.
09:19
Mine'd be like have you watched The Hills?
09:21
[Lynn] You should keep these.
09:22
I feel that you've done very well.
09:23
You're a poem and you're a work of art.
09:25
There you go. I'll take that.
09:26
We're both pieces of art.
09:27
[Lynn] Okay, you each get a bottle of champagne, too.
09:29
Oh, this is great news!
09:31
Can we pop it now?
09:32
Ready? You need to open it now.
09:33
Wait, wait, wait.
09:34
Wait, okay, wait, wait. We are doing it.
09:35
[corks pop] Oh, fuck!
09:37
Oh!
09:38
[all laughing]
09:43
[Lynn] That's a Freddie Mercury moment, for sure.
09:47
[laughs] All right, yay!
09:50
[Rami] Hey, we do drink Moet & Chandon!
