Michelle Williams Could Sleep Under a Banner of Barbra Streisand’s Face

Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Williams hasn't seen 'Manchester by the Sea' — the film for which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress — but just give her time. She's just not about said movies right now; instead, she and her daughter are both having a Barbra Streisand moment. Williams recalls her favorite movies growing up, tries to remember her first kiss, and revisits the 'Baywatch' years in this wide-ranging interview ahead of the 69th annual Academy Awards.

In the last three years,
00:04
I've done two plays and played two very small parts
00:06
in two very small films
00:08
and so I've had a three year break
00:11
from looking at myself
00:13
and from being aware of my face and my body
00:16
and I really enjoyed that break.
00:18
I really enjoyed that like oh well she's better
00:21
at this angle or like what does your face look like today?
00:24
I really, it was very nice for me to not think
00:26
kind of from here up.
00:28
I haven't been quick to go see these films
00:32
because I'm just out of practice
00:34
and I will I'm just waiting for the right time
00:36
and like a really good bottle of wine
00:37
and a really good friend.
00:38
[laughs]
00:40
Who's in?
00:41
I can't watch kids' movies, cartoons
00:44
because they always kill the funny one.
00:46
I'm thinking specifically of this movie,
00:48
Princess and the Frog.
00:49
It's like in the bayou and she wants to be
00:52
a cook and she wants to open her own restaurant
00:54
but she's too poor
00:55
and she likes help sew dresses for like a spoiled,
00:58
little rich girl
00:59
but the guy falls in love with her
01:00
but there's like this little magical like firefly thing.
01:02
Her best friend and it's funny
01:04
and they kill it.
01:06
I saw it with my daughter and with my best friend.
01:08
She was in between us
01:09
and we were both like clutching hands,
01:11
trying to not let her hear how much we were crying.
01:14
Like [gasps]
01:16
Why did it have to be so sad?
01:17
There's plenty of time for that.
01:19
So those movies, no.
01:21
Done.
01:22
Only like old like romantic comedies, musicals
01:25
for us from now on.
01:27
[Woman] Very good.
01:28
I don't want to be sad.
01:29
We didn't talk a lot about sex in my house growing up
01:31
so I got my sexual education from Splash,
01:35
Dirty Dancing but these were all like movies
01:38
that I had to like sneak out of the house to see.
01:41
Overboard, boy yeah.
01:45
I think it created like some like weird fantasy in my head
01:47
though that like I would be like enslaved
01:49
to like some ruffian and that that would be really hot.
01:53
[laughs]
01:54
And when is there ever Kurt Russell?
01:57
Barbra Streisand, my girl crush.
01:59
Every particular movie.
02:03
It doesn't matter to me.
02:04
It just doesn't matter to me.
02:05
I could watch her forever.
02:07
I could have her on a loop in my living room.
02:09
I could like fall asleep under like a banner of her face.
02:12
I just, she just does it for me in absolutely every way.
02:18
We can not get enough of her in my home.
02:21
Like she's our mutual girl crush, my daughter and I
02:24
just like, we just think she's hung the moon.
02:26
I honestly I don't remember my first kiss.
02:28
I don't, I don't remember it
02:32
but it could have been on Baywatch.
02:33
I think we kissed.
02:35
I was at a dream sequence of his
02:37
and then and I walked down the beach
02:39
and asked him to a party.
02:41
We might have kissed
02:43
but I don't remember my first kiss.
02:44
I guess that's kind of sad.
02:45
My favorite event on my birthday?
02:49
I gotta say I loved my last birthday.
02:51
I just turned 36 and we,
02:53
my neighbor and her two daughters came over
02:55
and cooked dinner with me and my daughter
02:57
and it was about as happy as I've ever been.
03:00
It was a great, great night.
03:03
It was messy and fun and real
03:05
and like the same as life.
03:07
Her little girl poured the soup on the floor
03:10
and said look, I'm sharing with the doggy.
03:12
I was just in heaven you know.
03:14
Give me 36 more years of this.
03:16
It was really perfect.
