My name is Lily-Rose Depp.
00:01
I am half French, half American, but I was born in Paris.
00:05
I, honestly, never really thought about acting
00:07
when I was a kid, I mean, I was always
00:09
a very performative kid and loved playing dress-up
00:12
and being dramatic, I guess.
00:14
But, I always thought I wanted to be a singer, actually,
00:16
just 'cause my mom's a singer,
00:17
and so I thought I wanted to do that, too,
00:19
until I sang this French song in a school talent show
00:23
when I was, like, 10 years old, and it was
00:24
probably the worst moment of my life.
00:26
I remember just thinking, just being up there and thinking,
00:29
God, I hate this so much, I'm having the worst time.
00:32
[chuckling]
00:33
And so that's the moment that I realized
00:34
that I didn't wanna be a singer.
00:41
My parents have always been really protective.
00:43
They've just always, kind of, shielded my brother and I
00:45
from all things, kind of, spotlight
00:47
and things like that so we could grow up
00:49
as normally as we could, and so I really appreciate that,
00:51
but, yeah, I mean, it wasn't that hard to tell them,
00:53
honestly, because it's like, they couldn't
00:55
really tell me no, they did the same thing.
00:58
[Interviewer] Exactly.
00:59
In The King, I play Princess Catherine,
01:01
Catherine du Valois, a French princess
01:03
who ends up marrying Henry V.
01:05
I did not have to wear a corset, I thought I was going to,
01:07
and I was really excited, 'cause I love corsets,
01:09
but it turns out we were a few Henry's too early
01:12
for the corsets.
01:14
Yeah, I love corsets, I don't know why.
01:16
[laughing]
01:17
I don't know, I like to feel very, kind of, locked in
01:20
to things like that.
01:21
Maybe it's my French side coming out there,
01:23
but no, it's not the century for those, yet.
01:26
I do dream in French, sometimes.
01:28
Sometimes when I spend a lot of time there,
01:29
I end up dreaming in French, or even starting
01:31
to count in French.
01:33
When I was younger, I used to just rummage
01:34
through mom's closet, and grab anything Chanel,
01:38
and just throw it on.
01:39
There's a picture of me in a diaper
01:40
wearing her Chanel pumps, and like.
01:43
Kind of going like that.
01:45
Like I said, I've always been a very performative child.
01:47
[laughing]
01:48
The first CD that I bought was the Jonas Brothers,
01:52
I think it was called, Lines, Vines, and Trying Times.
01:57
I'm pretty sure that was the name of it.
01:58
And I remember, specifically, being like,
02:01
I need to get my hands on this album, and I did.
02:04
I think I was a Nick.
02:05
I think I was a Nick Jonas girl.
02:07
I would say my 18th birthday was really fun.
02:09
I had a cowboy themed party,
02:12
and we had hay bales everywhere.
02:13
I also had a really awesome Sweet 16.
02:16
I had a Marie Antoinette, like French Revolution themed
02:19
Sweet 16, and we put guillotines everywhere,
02:22
and hay bales, and fake potatoes,
02:26
and so we can camped it up, and did a whole set for it.
02:29
I wore a, not a corset, but, like, it was a corset
02:33
kind of thing, like it was a very tight,
02:35
little tiny, old top, I was definitely on-theme.
02:39
But that was honestly, that was probably
02:40
my most memorable birthday party to date.
02:42
My fashion icon--
02:44
[Interviewer] Other than your mom.
02:45
Yeah, I was gonna say obviously my mom, but I mean.
02:48
I guess this is like classical French girl style icon
02:51
to say this, but Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot,
02:55
I love so much, and then I also love Carrie
02:57
from Sex and the City, like. [giggling]
03:00
I've got a good mix, I've got a good mix
03:01
of the French and the American.
03:03
I dressed up as a princess for the first 10 Halloweens
03:08
of my life.
03:09
Yeah, I went through all of them.
03:10
I think I was just general princess for a lot of years,
03:14
and then I remember one year, I turned the tables
03:16
on them and I went as a dead princess.
03:19
[laughing]
03:20
[Interviewer] I love that!
03:21
Which is like really intense,
03:22
and I remember my mom being like, I don't want you to be
03:24
like a dead princess.
03:26
They were like, you can be like a goth princess,
03:29
or an evil princess, but she didn't like me going around,
03:32
being like, I'm a dead princess. [laughing]
03:34
I went as lot of dead things, which is like,
03:36
I'm not even very goth or anything like that,
03:39
but I went as a dead angel, once, too, [laughing]
03:41
which was [laughing] which was fun.
03:43
When I was 13, I went as sexy bumblebee.
03:47
[laughing]
03:48
You know when you're 13, and you're like,
03:50
now I'm gonna start dressing sexy, kind of thing,
03:53
it's just a very short black and yellow striped dress.
03:57
[laughing]
03:58
And so I went as that, and my parents were mortified,
04:02
and I was just like, here I am.
04:05
But like.
04:06
[laughing]
04:07
Flying away.
04:09
Yeah, I feel like I've calmed down, now,
04:10
but definitely 13, 14, I was like, all right, here I am,
04:13
this is my I'm coming into my womanhood, right now.
04:17
In the bumblebee phase.
04:18
[laughing]
04:19
my first kiss was the most standard 14-year old,
04:22
like set up, thing.
04:23
It was my friend's friend, was like,
04:26
think I thought I was cute, and I thought he was cute,
04:28
and we all hung out, and went swimming,
04:31
or something like that, I think,
04:32
and then I think it was arranged that we were gonna
04:35
just end up hanging.
04:37
And that's how I had my first kiss.
04:39
I was so nervous.
04:40
I actually felt like I was kind of late to the game,
04:42
'cause I was 14.
04:43
But I was like, oh, my God, how is this gonna go down,
04:45
or whatever, but yeah, I was extremely nervous,
04:48
but he was a really nice guy, everything's great.
04:50
I called everyone, I called all of my friends,
04:52
being like, okay, I'm a woman.
04:55
It's been done, the deed is done.
