Chris Pine’s First Audition Was for “Gilmore Girls”

Chris Pine may be best known as Captain Kirk and, more recently, a dirtied up bank robber in the Golden Globe-nominated drama Hell or High Water, but according to the actor, he could be looking at Winston Churchill as his next role if his penchant for ice cream pints keeps up. He lets Lynn Hirschberg in on his soft spots, including his sex-scene inexperience and that Gilmore Girls experience, here.

My first audition was for...
00:09
Professionally speaking, was for the Gilmore Girls.
00:13
My father had gone in for an audition,
00:16
I had just graduated college, and he told Mara Casey,
00:20
my son's coming back into town, would you have him in
00:22
for a reading, so nepotism at its best.
00:25
I don't know!
00:26
You know, maybe a boyfriend of someone,
00:27
you know, I got my start playing boyfriends,
00:30
princes, husbandstobe.
00:33
It was a lot of responsibility, of course.
00:35
I took it very personally.
00:37
The burden is on my shoulders as well.
00:40
That's my English accent by the way, so,
00:42
clearly not gonna be doing anything other than paying old...
00:45
Maybe Winston Churchill at some point, if my balding goes
00:48
the way I think it will, and, you know,
00:50
I gain some weight after eating so many pints
00:52
of McConnell's ice cream.
00:54
Oh, my god.
00:56
Chocolate with the chocolate nibs.
00:59
The first thing that I booked, now I'm blushing,
01:01
Jesus Christ, thank God this is black and white.
01:04
It was a Hardee's commercial.
01:05
They were asking questions like this to make it seem
01:07
like, yeah, we're talking to real people about
01:09
eating, you know...
01:10
[Lynn] Hardee's.
01:11
Eating diabetes, and,
01:13
it's a bizarre thing to be hooked on.
01:15
Yeah, you know, my parents were actors.
01:17
My father's still an actor,
01:18
he's had a SAG card for 50 years.
01:20
And my grandmother was an actress,
01:23
and my grandfather was a producer,
01:25
and, so I've been around a lot of it all my life,
01:27
so it's not that I was hooked, and so
01:30
there was never a passion for it, it just kind of happened.
01:34
It seemed like the right thing, I wasn't too good at...
01:38
Many other things, and, I enjoyed it, and, you know,
01:42
got some validation from it as a needy, fragile kid,
01:46
and that felt good, and there you go.
01:49
I mean, Sophia Loren at her, you know,
01:52
Sophia Loren...
01:53
Anita Ekberg...
01:55
zaftig, as my mom would say.
01:57
In the fountain!
02:00
God, I have to say, I saw Rosemary's Baby
02:02
the other day for the first time, I know...
02:04
[Lynn] Mia Farrow?
02:05
Thank you very much.
02:06
[Lynn] Short hair or long hair?
02:07
I don't know.
02:09
They both work so splendidly.
02:10
But, you know, it was that age of that kind of like...
02:13
I guess it's in the ballpark of Breakfast at Tiffany's,
02:16
isn't it?
02:17
[Lynn] Yeah.
02:18
Within about seven years or whatever.
02:19
[Lynn] Yeah.
02:20
But that kind of beautiful Chanellike, you know,
02:21
that very kind of cut, highwaisted thing,
02:24
very flattering and very cool.
02:27
One of the sexiest moments on film
02:29
is that incredible scene in Out of Sight.
02:33
Yeah.
02:34
They're both so sexy in it.
02:36
I mean, the two of them just knock it out of the park.
02:38
Real, schmeal.
02:39
It's like it was...
02:40
It's what movies do so well.
02:41
It's like...
02:42
It's sexy and sensual, and they both look, you know, great.
02:46
[exhales forcefully]
02:47
I've never done a fullblown sex scene.
02:50
I may be doing Nymphomaniac II.
02:53
My birthday?
02:54
What are the ones that popped to mind.
02:55
Medieval Times, I used to go to Medieval Times
02:57
with my parents year after year, probably 'cause
02:59
it may mean that I should be on Game of Thrones.
03:02
[Lynn] How old...
03:03
Drogo!
03:03
Me and Drogo fight.
03:04
Medieval times was like a nine, ten, eleven thing.
03:07
I believe my father was in a renaissance fair once
03:10
during my birthday, and I believe I played his squire,
03:12
which was very funny.
03:14
I did wear a little...
03:15
I wore one little outfit, but yeah.
03:17
Oh, no, I'm neurotic beyond belief.
03:19
Oh yeah.
03:20
Deeply.
03:21
[Lynn] Okay.
03:22
Troubled.
03:23
[Lynn] I see.
03:24
It's very bad.
03:25
Really, really brooding.
03:26
There's this whole Ted Talk on listening, which I think
03:29
we could all, as a human species, listen to.
03:34
I think we're losing that art, especially with the phones,
03:36
and I am again, so guilty of this, but the phone is really,
03:39
it's less about information and it's more about, I find,
03:42
this is probably telling, but, me, me, me, me, me.
03:45
There's that great Louis CK thing where he's in the car
03:47
and he has that whole thing where it's like,
03:48
who's called me, who wants me, who loves me,
03:51
and he's checking his phone because he's getting a fix
03:52
of like, am I loved.
03:54
And that is dangerous, I think.
03:56
It can be.
03:57
So I've been meditating on that a little bit recently.
04:01
Well, now, what version of the kiss are we talking about?
04:04
The saucy ones?
04:05
I'm not gonna tell you the saucy one.
04:07
My parents are still alive.
04:09
First kiss was probably some sort of...
04:12
spin the bottle scenario.
04:15
May have been with Tess McCarthy.
04:18
Could have been with, I dunno.
04:20
I was seven years old, man!
04:23
Give me a break!
04:25
Real naughty.
04:26
Mmm.
04:28
God, that's gross.
04:29
Well you remember, though, back in the day,
04:30
when like spin the bottle, that was a big deal.
04:33
Truth or dare, yeah.
04:34
Sure.
04:35
I remember that.
04:35
Truth or dare.
04:36
God.
04:37
A long time ago, that.
04:38
Be a fun one to bring back, truth or dare.
04:40
[Lynn] Yeah, we could definitely bring it back.
04:41
Let's do it. Mm.
