Henry Golding’s First Crush Was Mariah Carey, and His First Kiss Was Soundtracked by Celine Dion | Screen Tests

Crazy Rich Asians’ Henry Golding likes his divas, apparently. Here, W’s cover star recalls his early hairdresser days in London (he still uses his skills on his wife), his “rubbish” first audition, his overnight movie stardom, his first makeout session to the tune of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” and his youthful fantasies about Mariah Carey in his first W Screen Test.

00:00
I was living in the East End of London.
00:01
I was doing hairdressing for, I think,
00:03
the past four or five years, and I was in the shower.
00:06
It was just this distinct moment where I just switched,
00:10
my mind was like, right well, I'm ready for the next thing
00:12
and nothing else made sense apart from moving,
00:15
trying my luck, buying that one-way ticket,
00:17
packing a bag and trying my hand at it.
00:25
Before all the movie stuff,
00:26
I used to be a television presenter,
00:28
so my first-ever audition was
00:31
for this magazine show in Malaysia.
00:33
I was absolutely terrified,
00:35
I used to be a hairstylist before that,
00:37
so coming from a salon into, sort of,
00:40
faking it 'til I made it in Malaysia
00:43
as a television host was terrifying.
00:45
So, it was a rubbish, rubbish audition.
00:48
The salon was in Sloane Square in Chelsea,
00:51
so we had all the really sort of fabulous clients,
00:55
and they loved big hair, lot's of big curls, soft curls.
00:59
So, I used to do sort of a nine brush big blow out,
01:03
which, which was pretty famous.
01:05
[Lynn] And did your wife ever ask you to do her hair?
01:07
Once in awhile; I actually did her hair
01:10
for, I think, Oscars weekend.
01:12
She was wearing a beautiful dress by Ralph Lauren,
01:16
and so, I'd give her a quick once over,
01:18
and a bit of a slicked back look,
01:20
so comes in handy once in awhile.
01:23
When they started looking for characters
01:24
for Crazy Rich Asians, I was like no,
01:26
no, I'm not ready, I'm not ready!
01:27
There'll be a time when I am ready!
01:29
But, John Chu had other thoughts,
01:32
and pretty much forced me to audition for him.
01:35
So, he got forwarded my name
01:37
from one of the accounting ladies,
01:39
and he fell down the rabbit hole of YouTube,
01:43
and seeing all my clips on there,
01:45
and it was that character that he saw,
01:48
which resonated for him, for the character of Nick Young.
01:51
The first two, three days on set were terrifying.
01:55
I will always remember just like,
01:57
what am I doing, what is this life?
02:01
But, everybody on that set was so welcoming.
02:03
Literally, by the second or third day,
02:06
it felt as if I had been doing it for ages.
02:09
Nobody knew or had heard of me,
02:12
so I went back to normal, and it was kind of like,
02:14
all right, well, I've had this amazing experience now.
02:17
If everything sort of went away, it would be as if
02:20
nothing had happened, so it was a whole year
02:24
until Crazy Rich-- A year?
02:25
Pretty much, and so, it was a lot of my sort of down time.
02:29
And then, John was coming to shoot some pick-up shots,
02:33
just around sort of Singapore again.
02:35
This was, must have been four or five months
02:38
after we had finished sort of principal shooting.
02:40
Him, the DP came around to my house,
02:42
I cooked them some roasted salmon
02:46
on soba noodles or something.
02:48
We actually watched a very, very early
02:50
version on my sort of home television,
02:55
and at that point, I just knew,
02:56
I was just like this is a wonderful film.
02:59
There wasn't much to do in the little village.
03:01
I grew up in the UK, just south of London.
03:04
But, the one thing you would do is go to the ice rink disco.
03:08
There was the excuse of having
03:10
to hold a girl's hand while skating around.
03:14
It was a big deal.
03:15
The first song that I remember
03:17
that I made out to was at some kid's like 16th,
03:22
15th birthday or something like that,
03:23
and it was Celine Dion, the Titanic song.
03:27
What's the, what's that song called, My Heart Will Go On?
03:29
And I remember she had loads of braces,
03:31
so I do remember the song and her braces.
03:35
[Lynn] Sounds like a good experience anyway.
03:37
[laughing]
03:38
I do have a karaoke song,
03:39
and it is George Michael Gotta Have Faith.
03:42

03:44
No. Please, c'mon!

04:17

04:21
about her coming to my little village, or little town,
04:25
and throwing a little concert.

04:29
and obviously woke up just feeling empty.
04:32
