My favorite love story is...
I love the love story in Steel Magnolias,
between all of those women.
I think it's beautiful.
There's so many complex female relationships in that film,
between sisters and friends and mothers and daughters,
and it's southern.
You know what?
One movie that makes me cry is Norma Rae,
and there's a scene where she's telling her children
that people are gonna say awful things
about their mother,
and it is such a moment of clear ferocity,
the ferocity of motherhood,
and wanting to be understood by her children,
and seen by her children,
as a human being.
Like, I'm not just your mother,
I'm actually this human being that's about to be torn apart,
but I want you to know that that's not who I am.
I love those moments in film where you have
to see an adult explain life to a child.
And, I have to say, Miles Teller in Whiplash.
I was really blown away by his performance,
and I'm so excited
to see how his career is gonna just take off.
I wrote him a letter,
I actually asked him to do a part in a movie I was doing,
and I said,
You know what I love about you is you're this young guy,
but I can honestly tell
that you know a haircut doesn't make a performance.
