Lights! Camera! Artists!

For the latest issue of W Art, Jason Schmidt photographed Francesco Vezzoli, Jesper Just and Wyatt Kahn, three of the artists headlining Performa 15, the performance art biennial which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. But the trio didn’t just sit pretty for Schmidt’s camera—appropriately, the shoot was a performance unto itself.

We are telling the story of ballet at the moment
00:47
where ballet was not performed on a stage,
00:50
which is interesting, but these movements
00:53
were performed in courtyards or courts
00:56
so the hierarchy, the dynamic was totally different.

[Man] When I work, I always start with a place
01:17
and if I don't have the place, I don't really have anything.
01:22
I was interested in the One World Trade Center because
01:25
somehow it feels like it's the prosthetic of the city.
01:29
It's supposed to represent something that is no longer,
01:32
as only one instead of two.
01:35
It has this kind of phantom limb feeling to it.

So this is an apparatus that is used for rehabilitation,
01:46
after an operation, for instance.

I like that you can't really tell if she's controlling

the machinery or if this machinery is controlling her hands.

[Woman] Wyatt, the gallery is calling.
02:09
Wyatt, how you been?
02:11
Good, I'm good, what's doing?
02:15
Wanted to see how the new painting's coming along.
02:17
Still ready next week?
02:19
I'm a continuation of the conversation of abstraction
02:21
in American art, specifically continuing
02:23
where structural paintings left off in the '60s and '70s.
02:26
I'm coming along, yeah, getting close.
02:30
Conversation about whether I am sculpture or painting
02:32
circles around me wherever I go.
02:34
I have been called, with wonder, a painting without paint.
02:38
What, did you say something?
02:40
No, no nothing, thanks for checking in.
02:45
Yeah, but you haven't really answered my question.
