Nicole Kidman Recalls Baz Luhrmann's "Legendary" Moulin Rouge New Year's Eve Party

Although Nicole Kidman assures us she has seen her share of enviable New Year's Eve parties, the "most legendary" was in 1999, during the filming of 'Moulin Rouge,' when Baz Luhrmann invited "all of Sydney." "I was shimmying with a snake... There's photos to prove it."

I literally still feel like I'm the kid
00:02
at drama school hoping to get a role.
00:04
That's how I operate.
00:06
That's what I come from
00:07
and whether that's to do with just my own vulnerability
00:11
and insecurity, but I always feel like I'm so fortunate
00:14
and lucky to have the job.
00:18
Jane Campion came and saw me when I was 14
00:21
doing, strangely enough, Sweet Bird of Youth, onstage.
00:25
I was playing Princess.
00:27
I did not know what I was doing at that age.
00:29
I had no idea what any of it meant
00:31
but I committed 'cause that's what I do.
00:33
But Jane saw me and she went,
00:36
I want her in my student film.
00:38
She brought me Portrait of a Lady,
00:40
But we built a friendship during all of that
00:42
and have had a friendship ever since
00:45
and I love her.
00:46
I love saying that.
00:47
I am married to a really, really, generous,
00:50
kind, strong male.
00:53
When he watched Big Little Lies he was disturbed
00:57
and he says that when he hears me scream or cry
01:01
from a certain place in my soul,
01:03
it's almost like it goes straight in to him
01:05
and he has a visceral reaction immediately.
01:08
His brain and his heart doesn't discern between acting
01:12
and real life, it throws him.
01:14
Well, Halloween's not a big thing in Australia
01:16
it's becoming bigger, so I didn't really grow up with it.
01:18
My first memory of Halloween
01:20
was, because I was born in the States
01:22
I remember wearing a ghost, a sheet,
01:25
that my Mum made with the eyes cut out
01:27
and I just remember looking through the eyes of the sheet
01:30
and seeing candy as we held our hands out.
01:33
That's my first memory of Halloween, wearing a sheet.
01:36
(laughing)
01:39
But I got candy.
01:40
I have so many different New Year's Eves.
01:43
The greatest one was 1999 where we were on Sydney Harbor
01:47
on a boat.
01:48
We were making Moulin Rouge
01:50
so we had Baz had sort of designed the whole party.
01:54
It felt like we had invited all of Sydney.
01:58
It went off.
01:59
It's one of the most legendary parties,
02:01
if I say so myself.
02:03
I remember dancing in some little tiny Dolce dress.
02:07
I was very much in to the role of Moulin Rouge at the time,
02:10
with a snake.
02:11
That's all I'm gonna say.
02:13
No, I was shimmying with a snake.
02:15
That's my memory.
02:17
And there's photos to prove it.
02:20
A Barbie, and that was to the chagrin of my mother
02:23
because, obviously she was like,
02:26
Barbies are not something she wanted me to have
02:29
because they have the perfect form.
02:31
The thing that every feminist was like,
02:34
No little girl should be playing with a Barbie.
02:36
But I just wanted a Barbie.
02:38
It was like, I just want a Barbie
02:39
'cause everyone else has a Barbie.
02:41
So then my Mum went, Okay.
02:43
After a situation where I took a Barbie
02:45
from the store and then my Mum made me take it back
02:48
and then she was like, I'll buy my daughter a Barbie.
02:50
But my grandmother was the most beautiful seamstress
02:52
and my mother is a beautiful seamstress
02:55
so they made me the most beautiful Barbie clothes
02:58
you've ever seen in your life.
02:59
I mean gorgeous, embroidered
03:03
and all little tiny, tiny buttons down the back.
03:06
I mean we are talking exquisite work,
03:09
which is where my love of fashion started.
03:12
I don't think we really had red carpets
03:14
when Dead Calm came out.
03:15
I remember going to the Academy Awards with Tom,
03:18
I can't remember,
03:19
I think it was a very, very short Valentino dress.
03:23
I didn't realize that you don't wear very, very short
03:25
to the Academy Awards at that stage.
03:27
It was black velvet.
03:29
It was pretty great.
03:30
I've still got it.
03:31
I just remember being sort of overcome by all of that.
03:34
But that was fun.
03:36
[Interviewer] What was your first pet's name?
03:38
Gregory.
03:39
[Interviewer] And what was the street you grew up on?
03:41
William Edward.
03:43
[Interviewer] Gregory William Edward is your porno name?
03:45
Yeah.
03:46
(laughing)
03:48
Hot.
03:49
(laughing)
