(wind chimes ringing)
Like, I didn't have a clue what I was doing at all
'cause it was just me doing it all myself.
I went through a lot of the early business mistakes
at that time.
It's much easier not to be an artist and to sell
rather than be an artist and think to sell.
I do it even with new models, as a corporation,
I did everything myself.
We're completely independent.
We don't have outside funding on any level.
I mean at a certain point, to compete with shows
that are spending so much money and have the ability
to develop things, even from a creative standpoint
you want to do more.
Now that we actually got a financial backer
and relaunched the brand.
So basically, this is it.
You pay the bill at the end of the month.
You can't keep just producing collections
that just end on the runway.
It's gorg, isn't it?
It fits perfectly.
Mm, well merry Christmas. Filling it out nicely, aww.
(soft guitar music)
I've never, ever seen anything this cute.
My impressions of Miami are I don't want to
go back to New York right now. (laughs)
We're shooting fall/winter collections and right now
it's 102 degrees outside.
I'm wearing lots of sunscreen today.
I'm one of those pale Northern folks, so.
I'm more of a splasher than a swimmer,
I don't really swim proper.
It's not like a bikini culture like it is here in Miami,
the whole fitness, body, sun, leisure kinda world.
Initially, when I started, it was out of my dorm room.
It was just me and my sister-in-law.
I guess that it goes back to childhood,
I've always been interested in art
and I studied graphics, but that wasn't really
where I wanted to go with it.
I was always into fashion as a kid.
I've become the fashion person from Italy
because it started of my concept
from a slot machine gambling game.
I got started in fashion when I was very young
'cause my grandmother, she's always sewed.
Started working when I was 14 in a costume department.
I think in the beginning it's just about finding
that balance of what you can do to make it work.
'Cause, you know, there's always a way,
there's always a solution.
You know we saved our money,
we bought a really nice fabric and we had these ten pieces.
We went to New York, we stayed in our friend's apartment.
We went to Women’s Wear Daily
and we were on the cover in two days.
Today we photographed Kate Moss wearing
a full suit, a full grey suit.
The actual photo I think will be great
with the setting and everything,
it looked like another family portrait, actually.
I always think how do you get better at what you're doing?
Like the great designers work 30 years, 40 years.
You just have to really believe in what you believe in
and kinda go 110 percent.
You know in the circus, those people walking on the rope?
That's the feeling I have.
People listen if you put
all your life inside what you believe.
So faith takes you to future.
You amass the techniques.
You don't know everything overnight, and you can't.
And I feel like the only thing that you can do
is try and follow your gut, that's it.
This trip has been like a total whirlwind,
and so far removed from the reality
of me being in London in my 250 square foot studio.
I think I need to reflect.
(sombre violin music)
The reality is is that you just can't stop.
No matter what someone would necessarily say to you,
first and foremost to do this you really need a drive.
You need some balls to do this collection
and have everybody sitting
and they're about to talk about your work,
whether it's good or bad.
