Milo Ventimiglia Confirms That Gilmore Girls' Jess Had "Good Hair" and "Dope Jackets"

As Rory's Jess in "Gilmore Girls," Milo Ventimiglia shouldered the burden of being one of teen television's most scrutinized and most exasperating love interests. "Everyone wanted to find someone like Jess," the actor, who now stars in NBC's "This Is Us," recalls. It may have come down, really, to a few basics: "If you got that hair, and you got a cool jacket, and you got a book in your pocket, then, well, you must be good for a girl."

I was raised at Disneyland.
00:05
Haunted Mansion is the best place for a date.
00:06
It's slow moving you're in your dune buggy.
00:08
You're takin it easy at one point it goes back.
00:12
That was the place to go.
00:14
I was either gonna be an actor, a naval aviator,
00:16
or a pediatric surgeon.
00:18
Those were the three things that I wanted to do.
00:20
I wanted to help kids, I wanted to fly jets or
00:23
I wanted to just be an actor and acting kinda took over.
00:27
I was 18 when I got into the business.
00:29
I did a lot of commercials.
00:30
My first commercial ever was a Dr. Pepper commercial
00:32
and then I had done a Mountain Dew commercial,
00:35
lot of soft drinks.
00:36
My very first real paying gig was on
00:39
Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
00:40
Will Smith was a major movie star but also he had this show.
00:44
So I just sat there and just watched him.
00:46
I played party guest number one.
00:48
Oh I was stoked, I remember I got the call,
00:50
I was going to school at UCLA and I was in my first year
00:54
and I remember in the morning getting the call.
00:56
I'm like I got the job? I got.
00:58
Freakin out that I'm gonna have one line on Fresh Prince
01:00
of Bel Air.
01:01
Gilmore I was 24 years old.
01:04
Still to this day it blows me away the impact of
01:07
the Jess character how much everyone was in love with
01:11
him and wanted to find a guy like Jess.
01:13
He had good hair, he had that Pompadour thing goin
01:16
and he had ya know dope jackets and he always
01:17
had a book in his back pocket and I feel like
01:20
well if you got that hair and you got a cool jacket
01:22
and you got a book in your pocket
01:23
you must be like good for a girl.
01:26
I am on This Is Us and I play Jack.
01:29
I knew that it was special.
01:31
I knew that it was different than anything
01:33
else that was kind of on television.
01:35
When I'm watching This Is Us I don't cry over Jack's stuff.
01:39
I cry with the other characters.
01:41
I guess if I wasn't on my show I'd be just a wet
01:42
noodle watching my show all the time.
01:45
As I grew up I think everybody had a crush on
01:47
Alyssa Milano.
01:48
This is the crazy part.
01:50
She and I did a movie where she played my fiance.
01:52
Kinda had to get past that ya know wow, no she's my
01:55
co-star and she plays my fiance and we're a couple
01:59
and we're a team and really it was a dark fucked
02:02
up movie but still when I was a kid it was totally
02:05
Alyssa Milano.
02:06
A romantic kiss I was freshmen in high school.
02:10
It might have been a friend of mine who was older than me
02:13
who liked this girl but he was kinda like pickin on her
02:19
and he's like well you should just kiss Milo and I was
02:21
literally just like huh?
02:22
It was at my friends house, Friday night we're all
02:25
just hanging out and I remember this girl I think
02:27
her name was Michelle.
02:29
She just walked up and she just grabbed me and
02:31
she pulled me in and kissed me and like I couldn't
02:33
leave the couch after that.
02:35
I was shocked and terrified and in love and
02:38
feeling something I'd never really felt before
02:41
and it was amazing and I wanted it again
02:43
but that was my friend Roger's girl that he
02:47
was kinda dating and aw man.
02:50
I think that one definitely like put me on my ass.
02:53
I did have a karaoke song when I was in my early twenties
02:56
it was always Earth Wind & Fire do you remember
03:00
the 21st night of September I was chasing the night
03:04
and I would sing that or Billy Idol Rebel Yell
03:07
was always a good one too.
03:08
With a rebel yell she's cry more more more
03:12
with a rebel yell.
03:14
I like to sew, I like to mend things oh that's
03:16
torn that's ripped you got a hole in it?
03:18
Yeah cool just grab some needle and thread just
03:20
ya know make it neat put it together.
03:23
I think there's a lot of great men that can sew.
03:25
You know I'm not a tailor although I'd love to
03:27
build a suit I think that'd be amazing to design
03:30
and build a suit but at the same time it's
03:32
a little more out of function.
03:34
Lose a button gotta sew the button back on before
03:37
you leave the house or you got a hole in a sweater
03:39
it's like well you gotta fix it if you wanna wear it.
03:42
(woman laughing)
03:43
So it was always kind of a practical application
03:45
kind of a thing less than ya know a driving
03:48
desire to be like oh I'm gonna learn how to sew.
