Stefano Tonchi Talks About the Power of the Selfie

On Thursday evening, W’s Editor in Chief Stefano Tonchi sat down with Leandra Medine, the blogger better known as The Man Repeller, at the Apple store in Soho, to talk about fashion, art, and the process of making a magazine in the digital age. “Social media has become like the clothes you wear—it’s the image you want to give of yourself,” Tonchi observed. “It’s a way to represent yourself.” Watch a clip of the interview here, and see the full video on iTunes.

I mean, what social media actually has done is become
00:04
a little bit like the clothes you wear.
00:08
It's like the image that you want to give of yourself.
00:12
It's a way to represent yourself.
00:14
Clearly, the selfie is the biggest example of that
00:20
but I think it goes down to really like the picture
00:23
of the food that you are eating, or the book that you
00:26
are reading, or the things that you like.
00:29
It's kind of putting out there a portrait of yourself.
00:33
And that's, I think, it's why I think social media,
00:37
Instagram, all these different way of communicating
00:43
have become so popular somehow.
00:46
And also, why they are so close to the essence of fashion.
00:51
When I think about fashion I always think about
00:56
a way of representing, presenting, introducing myself.
01:00
It's like the image that I want to give of myself.
01:03
We used to do it every day, deciding what we wear,
01:07
what kind of makeup you put on, what kind of lipstick.
01:10
Now it's about also what kind of picture I'm going to
01:13
put out there, what is on my Facebook page, somehow.
